Venezuela Seeks Diplomatic Engagement with US
The appeal came on Wednesday as tensions linger after events that dramatically shifted the political landscape in Caracas.
Addressing the nation from the Miraflores presidential palace in Venezuela’s capital, Delcy Rodríguez referenced her recent telephone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighting the long standing historical ties between the two nations.
She emphasized that any disputes should be resolved respectfully, adhering to international law and Venezuela’s constitution, and underscored that constructive dialogue was the most desirable avenue.
Rodríguez also noted that extremist factions had attempted to take advantage of the U.S. intervention to foster disorder within Venezuela. Nevertheless, she said the Venezuelan people had responded with composure and self control, helping to counter efforts to destabilize the country. She added that following the airstrikes and related incidents, peace and stability had returned to many communities.
In her remarks, Rodríguez stressed the Venezuelan populace’s desire to “preserve their sovereignty, safeguard national independence, peace and tranquility.”
She further stated, “If there is one thing in which Venezuelans are united, it is that any controversy, any disagreement with the United States government must be addressed diplomatically, through political dialogue,” emphasizing unity around the pursuit of peaceful solutions.
Referring to the U.S. military attack on Jan. 3, which involved targeted strikes and culminated in U.S. forces capturing and removing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, she commented that “this attack constitutes a stain on our relations, and we must work diligently and respectfully to overcome our differences.”
Rodríguez’s comments come amid ongoing efforts to manage the diplomatic fall out and explore ways to rebuild bilateral ties.
