Venezuela’s Interim President Meets US Envoy to Restore Diplomatic Ties
The meeting occurred at Miraflores Palace, where officials discussed “the work agenda between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the United States,” according to the country’s Communication and Information Minister.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced that Rodriguez had designated Felix Plasencia as Venezuela’s diplomatic representative to the United States. Plasencia is expected to relocate to the US with his team in the coming days.
"We've reviewed the peace and respect agenda," Gil said, noting that discussions also covered energy, political, and economic matters.
The US Embassy in Venezuela confirmed that Dogu met with Rodriguez and National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez to “reiterate the three phases that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had outlined for Venezuela: stabilization, economic recovery and reconciliation, and transition.”
The meeting follows a period of heightened tensions, including the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3. This series of events also included Rodriguez being sworn in, reforms to the country’s key oil legislation, and the release of some political prisoners.
