UK Holds Ground Against Trump Tariff Threats
Trump insists American control of the Arctic territory is critical for protecting national interests, arguing Denmark and fellow European NATO allies lack the capability to prevent a theoretical seizure by Beijing or Moscow. The position has triggered backlash across Europe, with allied governments condemning Washington for destabilizing the transatlantic defense partnership.
"Our position on Greenland is non-negotiable. We've made that very clear. And we'll continue to make that clear," Nandy stated during an interview Sunday, reaffirming UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's earlier stance.
Starmer emphasized the island's destiny "is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes" and characterized tariffs against NATO members opposing Trump's ambitions as "completely wrong."
Last week, multiple Western European and Nordic powers—Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the UK—deployed between one and fifteen military personnel to Greenland for a Danish-organized training operation. German forces have since departed, a defense official confirmed.
The EU has warned it's prepared to unleash countermeasures that bureaucrats have dubbed a "trade bazooka" against Trump's levies. The initial 10% US import duty on eight European countries, linked to the Greenland controversy, launches February 1 and could escalate to 25% by June 1.
Earlier this month, NATO members largely backed the US abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom many of Washington's partners refuse to acknowledge as the country's lawful head of state.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized the Greenland situation as "extraordinary in terms of international law" while noting it aligns with Trump's established pattern of dismissing whether foreign governments consider his decisions legitimate. Moscow continues observing the unfolding crisis, he noted.
