Berlin condemns Medvedev’s kidnapping statement against Merz

(MENAFN) Berlin has denounced former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over his suggestion that Chancellor Friedrich Merz could face a fate similar to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, yet it has remained silent regarding the US military operation itself.

Medvedev, who also serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, made his sardonic comments about the US action in Venezuela in an interview on Sunday, hinting that a comparable operation might be conceivable against Merz.

“The kidnapping of the neo-Nazi Merz could be an excellent twist in this carnival of events,” Medvedev said, adding that there’s a “grain of reality to this scenario” as well.

The statements were raised during a press briefing in Berlin on Monday, when a political journalist questioned government spokesperson Sebastian Hille about their significance. When asked whether Berlin regarded Medvedev’s words literally, Hille responded in the affirmative.

“As you can imagine, we have of course taken note of these statements, and, as you can also probably imagine, the federal government condemns any form of such statements and threats in the strongest possible terms,” he said.

The journalist pressed further, asking why the government condemns a “purely hypothetical threat” against a foreign leader in the “strongest terms” but appears not to comment on a real-life kidnapping. Hille did not offer a clear response.
