Death toll rises to eighty in US military operation in Venezuela
Venezuela’s Defense Minister, Vladimir Padrino, previously stated that a large portion of President Nicolas Maduro’s security team was killed during the operation, though he did not provide exact figures.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the military action led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and pledged that the United States would temporarily “run” Venezuela if needed.
Maduro and Flores were flown to New York late Saturday and are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. They face US federal charges linked to drug trafficking and alleged cooperation with gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the accusations, while officials in Caracas have demanded their release.
