ECOWAS urges international community to respect integrity of Venezuela
In an official statement, ECOWAS said it was monitoring developments in Venezuela with concern. While acknowledging the right of nations to combat international crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, the bloc emphasized that “ECOWAS wishes to remind the international community about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter.”
The West African organization reaffirmed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and expressed support for efforts to determine the country’s future through an inclusive and participatory process.
The death toll from the US military operation on Saturday has reportedly reached 80, with the possibility of further casualties, according to a senior Venezuelan official cited by reports. Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino confirmed that a significant portion of Maduro’s security personnel were killed, though he did not provide precise figures.
US President Donald Trump stated that the operation led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and asserted that the United States would assume temporary control over the country, including the potential deployment of troops. The couple arrived in New York late Saturday and are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, facing federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged collaboration with gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the accusations, and Venezuelan officials in Caracas have demanded their release.
