US official says America is “running” Venezuela during transition
The official argued that the United States dictates the framework for Venezuela’s economic operations and maintains broad oversight during the transition, citing sanctions and enforcement measures as central tools of influence.
"By definition, we are in charge, because we have the United States military stationed outside the country. We set the terms and conditions. We have a complete embargo on all of their oil and their ability to do commerce," Miller said.
"So for them to do commerce, they need our permission. For them to be able to run an economy, they need our permission. So the United States is in charge. The United States is running the country during this transition period," he added.
These comments come as debate continues in Washington over the legality and international consequences of US actions in Venezuela, with critics cautioning that such involvement could breach international law and further destabilize the region, as stated by observers.
Over the weekend, President Trump said that US military operations led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, first lady Cilia Flores, and reiterated his intention to impose American control over the country for the time being, including the possible use of US troops if necessary.
